  2. prolific illustrator, and also active as a
  3. painter, etcher, and sculptor. He produced
  4. closely worked engravings of scenes from, for
  5. example, Rabelais, Dante, Cervantes, the
  6. Bible, Milton, and Poe. Dore was born in
  7. Strasbourg. His views of Victorian London
  8. 1869-71, concentrating on desperate poverty
  9. and overcrowding in the swollen city, were
  10. admired by van Gogh.
